First off I want to give a big thank you to anyOne and everyone who has put time blood a sweat into giving back to us which was supposed to always be ours after purchase, our ps3's. Been roaming the site an forum for a while and even registered a while back, have not made a post till now because I wanted to go about this the right way and not upset anyone so I had to think first.

On with it!!!!!

Ok, ok... I consider myself somewhat savy but all your how to's go over my head, heck I understand string theory better then how to install Linux on one of my ps3's. So my question is can someone give me a layman how to or give a link to one ( IE download "this file" using your pc save to thumb drive, insert to ps3 press yes. Download "this file" using your pc save to thumb drive, insert to ps3 click ok.... Now I have duel boot OS!!!!! )

Thing is there are prob 10's of thousands of people who want or would use otherOS++ but the how to's are beyond them. We all can win this war but we need numbers, and to get those numbers there has to be a point and click how-to or install.

Sorry if I upset anyone but I want to help just as much as you.

Many thanks,
Roamer

I'm glad you like what the PS3 guys have been working on, enough so to come post about it. Smile

I don't have a complete understanding of it myself, but I do understand Linux fairly well. As I understand the current state of using Linux with OtherOS++, it's still basically in development. It can be installed, but at this stage, the steps to do it require knowledge beyond what many people have. A tutorial like what you suggest is just what we need, but as far as I know, we don't have one, unless it's lurking hidden somewhere in glevand's home directory (http://gitbrew.org/~glevand/ps3/).

The problem, as I understand it, mainly stems from the Linux kernel lacking support for much of the PS3 hardware, namely the hard drive. The stock Linux kernel, on many PS3's, does not see the hard drive properly, which prevents an easy installation. This has been sort of fixed. Drivers for the hardware exist (glevand made them) for FreeBSD and I believe are actually included in FreeBSD mainline now. He has also created Linux drivers, but they are not part of the mainline kernel, meaning that any distro you download isn't going to have them. So, you would have to make a somewhat custom install media.

I think the person most likely able to provide you with easy to follow instructions, if they exist, is Snowy, but he left gitbrew several months ago. I talk to him occasionally though, and I will ask him about this next I talk to him.

You should ask specific questions and go to the Linux section of this forum. There you will find some info e.g. how to compile custom linux kernel and so on.
