You cannot use framebuffer patches and ps3vram together.
Either don't use frasmebuffer patches or do not use ps3vram.
That's your choice. I do not use ps3vram.

Hit a snag trying to cross compile linux 3.

I built gcc 4.6.2 and binutils 2.22.

I got to this step and got this error, no errors up to this point:

I'm not sure when I'm supposed to apply those patches you have up on the site. The howto doesn't state when and being new at cross compiling, there's a lot of things I do not understand. From what I can tell we are building the kernel for a ps3 debian install while on our PC's. But the above error makes no sense to me.

Ok, i'm doing it like this.

1. Download vanilla Linux kernel
2. Extract it
3. Go to the extracted Linux src dir
4. Apply patches you want in the right order (see series file), e.g. like this
patch -p0 < ~/patches/<patch name>

5. Copy my config file or use your own

cp ~/config-3.2.11 .config

6. Compile and install kernel (see howto)

And my kernel is NOT for debian. It's just a Linux kernel which can be used on Debian or any other distro. But some distros need more features in Linux kernel so it's up to you to enable them.

And you can leave out LOCALVERSION while compiling/configuring a Linux kernel.
It's only an example how to add custom suffix to your linux kernels so you can install several
at once with different names. E.g one stable with no suffix and one for testing with -test suffix. This way you will always have a kernel to boot in case something goes wrong with your new -test kernel if it doesn't boot.

Thank You. I didn't understand the order. Series file makes sense. That answers one of my questions. Maybe it's lack of patching that is causing the "installkernel" error i'm getting. So let me try and report back.

And one more thing, you shouldn't use defconfig step in case you want to use a custom config.

I apologize for having so many questions. I have some end goals for completing these projects. I've learned a lot about linux compiling in the last few days, but i'm still somewhat of a noob at some of this. I tend to take Howto's too literally and when they don't work as planned i'm more lost then ever generating more questions. I'll try what you've said and report back.

Your base config is good enough for me. or a Basic config with ps3 stuff.

I just tried again. Patched. Went well.

Didn't use ps3_defconfig.

I used your config-3.2.11 copied to .config.

make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-linux- menuconfig

Loaded alternate config. selected .config, then saved.

make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-linux-

mkdir -p $HOME/linux-3.2.11-build/boot

This is where it fails.
make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-linux- install INSTALL_PATH=$HOME/linux-3.2.11-build/boot

Any idea why?

Is something broken in the install.sh script? or been updated?

EDIT:
Looking it over, the only thing I see is that it's adding arch/powerpc/boot/dtbImage.ps3 in there when usage doesn't ask for that. If that is the case, how can we prevent it?

You don't have to load config. Just copy it to .config and then you can edit it with menuconfig and enable extra features.
Or just skip menuconfig if you don't want to change anything in my config.
Are you sure $HOME/linux-3.2.11-build/boot exists ?

Okay, I just manually copied the 4 files into ~/linux-3.2.11-build/boot.

~/linux-3.2.11/vmlinux
~/linux-3.2.11/System.map
~/linux-3.2.11/arch/powerpc/boot/zImage.pseries
~/linux-3.2.11/arch/powerpc/boot/dtbImage.ps3

Into:

~/linux-3.2.11-build/boot/

I'm hoping that is all that is needed since /sbin/installkernel script fails miserably in Linux Mint. Can you verify this is all that is needed by the command.

make ARCH=powerpc CROSS_COMPILE=powerpc64-linux- install INSTALL_PATH=$HOME/linux-3.2.11-build/boot

I'm also confused on the steps Recompile the kernel after copying the files to the PS3. It seems it already has those 5 driver/scsi files already copied. Why recompile?

And the Kernel Makefile at the bottom of the howto. When am I supposed to execute that? Did I not already compile the kernel? And from what directory?

Thanks

Glevand,

I wrote an installer for linux kernel 3 on debian by debootstrapping. It made it all the way through make. but on make install i got the same exact error I get with cross compiling. installkernel usage error. This has got to be a bug linux kernel 3.2.11 and the powerpc64. Because i'm getting it now both with cross compile and actual compile on the ps3. Is just copying those 4 files enough listed in the reply just above this one? If so i'll just write my script to handle it manually.

Thanks.
